In the late 90's Michigan reformers, activists and consumers came together to form the Personal Responsibility Amendment, a petition drive to legalise Cannabis. Together, we created a real grass roots movement, fueled by passion, hard work, and friendships. We collected almost 300,000 signatures, but fell short of the goal by 15,000. From our efforts during the petition drive, a network of diverse citizens formed a coalition which we named Michigan Marijuana Movement. With the help of friends and a commitement to organize, our movement gained momentum and recognition and became a chapter of NORML (National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws). I was named the director and fulfilled an organizational role, bringing people and information together- but it was as a collective that we created a productive and passionate non-profit. Today, Michigan NORML (MiNORML) continues to be a positive model for NORML chapters across the country. Although the movement looked hopeful to pass a medical bill in the future, I made the choice to move to Oregon in 2004 to be with my family and to take advantage of medical marijuana in action. Soon after, Michigan also reached a hallmark of legislation through continued efforts by passing medical intiatives in several cities. Through a lasting connection with reform movements nationwide, I will continue to organize for reform and awareness reaching through and beyond the needs of Oregonions- but for the needs and rights of American consumers. This is American Cannabis.
